Role Overview
As a Senior Full Stack Engineer (Cloud & Edge), you will own the backend services and infrastructure that power our grid-management platform, spanning cloud and private/edge environments. You will take primary responsibility for backend architecture and DevOps practice - cloud and on-prem - while also contributing to our frontend codebase. This is a senior, cross-domain role for someone who thinks as comfortably in infrastructure and deployment as they do in application code.
Reporting and Collaboration
Reports directly to the Engineering Manager Cloud & Edge, and collaborates closely with the wider engineering team to align infrastructure and application development with company-wide technical and commercial goals.
While the role spans backend, infrastructure, and frontend systems, the primary focus is backend architecture and cloud/edge platform engineering.
What will you be doing?
Backend Development(Python / Rust) - Primary Focus
- Design and implement backend services and APIs using Python and/or Rust.
- Design and maintain secure, scalable data storage solutions usingInfluxDB and other databases as required.
- Implement authentication and authorisation (OAuth, JWT, or equivalent).
DevOps & Infrastructure - Primary Focus
- Design, implement, and maintain CI/CD pipelines using tools appropriate to the target environment (e.g. GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, AWS CodePipeline).
- Own infrastructure-as-code practices using Terraform or Ansible across cloud and on-prem environments.
- Build and maintain private cloud and test-lab infrastructure using KVM and bare-metal provisioning.
- Manage containerised workloads with Docker/Kubernetes, and contribute to our container orchestration and platform environments (OpenShift and others).
- Design and support cloud-to-edge integration between cloud platforms and Linux-based edge infrastructure.
- Own monitoring, logging, and observability across cloud and on-prem environments (e.g. Grafana, InfluxDB, or equivalent).
- Design and implement deployment strategies (e.g. blue-green, canary, automated rollback) to minimise production risk.
- Monitor application and infrastructure performance; troubleshoot across cloud and on-prem deployments.
- Nice to have: AWSexperience (Amplify, Lambda, API Gateway, S3, CloudFront) and exposure toSEAPATH or similar virtualisation platforms for substation/edge computing.
Frontend Development - Supporting
- Maintain and extend existing frontend UI components (framework-agnostic - current stack is component-based JS/TS, but we value general frontend competence over tool-specific expertise).
- Collaborate with the Commercial team on UI/UX improvements as needed.
- Full ownership of frontend architecture is not expected - this is a supporting skill, not a primary focus.
Mentoring & Leadership
- Lead technical decision-making and provide mentorship across backend, infrastructure, and deployment practices.
- Mentor and support junior and mid-level DevOps engineers, fostering technical growth and knowledge sharing across the team.
- Contribute to data governance, documentation, and engineering best practices.
- Participate in technical reviews and sprint planning.
- Maintain awareness of emerging DevOps industry trends.
What We’re Looking For
Essential Skills and Experience
- 7+ years of relevant experience spanning at least two of: backend development, DevOps/infrastructure engineering, or systems engineering.
- Backend: Strong proficiency in Python and/or Rust, and experience designing and building APIs.
- DevOps: Solid general DevOps practice - CI/CD, infrastructure-as-code (Terraform or Ansible), monitoring/observability. Experience working with at least one major cloud platform (AWS, Azure, or GCP) is desirable but not essential.
- Private/edge infrastructure: Experience with KVM, bare-metal provisioning, and container orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes); container platform/orchestration experience (OpenShift or similar) a strong plus.
- Frontend: Working knowledge of modern JavaScript/TypeScript and component-based frontend frameworks, sufficient to maintain existing UI code. No specific framework required.
- Familiarity with time-series/database technologies such as InfluxDB.
- Experience with monitoring/observability tooling and incident troubleshooting in production environments.
- Experience with Git and CI/CD pipelines.
- Strong understanding of security best practices, authentication, and authorisation.
- Experience mentoring or guiding junior engineers.
