Role Overview

We are looking for a Senior Cloud & Infrastructure Engineer to own SMPnet's cloud platform - both our AWS environment and our growing private cloud deployments for utility clients. Reporting to the Engineering Manager for Cloud & Edge, you will be the technical owner of cloud infrastructure: designing and operating the systems that underpin our products, and the go-to expert for cloud and infrastructure decisions within the team. We are looking for someone with the depth to own today's systems and the breadth of thinking to evolve them.

‍

What will you be doing?

AWS Cloud Ownership

  • Own and operate SMPnet's AWS environment: account governance, IAM, security posture, cost optimisation, and infrastructure lifecycle.
  • Design and deliver production-grade infrastructure using AWS CDK (TypeScript), covering services such as Lambda, ECS/Fargate, API Gateway, S3, DynamoDB, VPC, and EventBridge.
  • Build and maintain reusable CDK constructs and infrastructure patterns shared across the engineering team.
  • Own observability and incident response: monitoring, alerting, and structured post-mortems (CloudWatch, X-Ray, OpenSearch).
  • Maintain and improve CI/CD pipelines and deployment workflows for cloud-hosted services.

‍

Private Cloud & On-Premises Deployments

  • Design private cloud environments for TSO and DSO clients, where on-premise or air-gapped deployments are required.
  • Manage bare-metal provisioning, hypervisor platforms (KVM-based, on-prem Kubernetes), and private network architecture.
  • Build and maintain Infrastructure-as-Code tooling for on-premise environments — cloud-init, Ansible, Terraform or Pulumi.
  • Ensure deployment consistency between AWS and on-prem environments, supporting multi-tenant and multi-environment configurations.
  • Technical Ownership & Collaboration
  • Take technical ownership of cloud team deliverables: contribute to sprint planning, participate in code and architectural reviews, and support junior engineers where needed.
  • Maintain clear technical documentation: infrastructure diagrams, ADRs, runbooks, and operational procedures.
  • Collaborate closely with backend, data, and edge engineers to ensure infrastructure meets product requirements.

What We’re Looking For‍

Essential Skills and Experience

  • 5+ years of hands-on cloud engineering with deep AWS expertise (IAM, Lambda, ECS, VPC, CDK in TypeScript).
  • Solid private cloud and on-prem infrastructure experience: bare-metal provisioning, KVM/hypervisors, on-prem Kubernetes.
  • Infrastructure-as-Code proficiency: AWS CDK (TypeScript), Terraform, or Pulumi.
  • Strong scripting skills in Python and Bash for automation and tooling.
  • Good working knowledge of DevOps practices: CI/CD, GitOps, and container orchestration (Kubernetes / Docker).
  • Solid networking fundamentals: TCP/IP, DNS, VPN, firewall rules, and overlay networking.
  • Excellent written and spoken English.

Bonus Skills & Experience

  • Experience with SEAPATH, OpenShift Virtualization, or KubeVirt in regulated or utility environments.
  • Homelab or self-hosted infrastructure experience — a genuine signal of craft and curiosity.
  • Awareness of database operations: InfluxDB or PostgreSQL in production (not required to own them).
  • Familiarity with full-stack deployment pipelines — enough to collaborate confidently with backend and frontend engineers.
  • Exposure to multi-tenant SaaS architecture patterns.
  • Familiarity with utility, energy, or industrial IoT environments (OT/IT convergence).
  • AWS Professional or Specialty certifications (Solutions Architect, DevOps Engineer).

‍

What We Offer

  • A full-time position with a competitive salary.
  • Benefits, including stock options, 28 days holidays (excluding statutory), private health insurance, €1,000 one-off training budget for professional development and wellness.
  • Flexible working hours with a focus on achieving a balanced work environment.
  • A collaborative and innovative atmosphere with opportunities to impact the company's direction and growth.
